Yes, it's strongly genetic
Twin studies estimate the heritability of eczema at around 75% — a strong genetic component. The best-understood piece is the filaggrin (FLG) gene, which helps build the skin's protective barrier; changes in it are the strongest known genetic risk factor (see what causes eczema). This is why eczema, asthma, and hay fever cluster in families.
But genes aren't destiny
Here's the important nuance: genetics raise the risk, they don't guarantee it. Many children with eczema have no affected close relatives, and plenty of children with a family history never develop it. Genes load the dice; environment and chance still throw them. So a family history is a heads-up, not a verdict.
Will a sibling or next baby have it?
The honest answer: the risk is higher than average, but it's far from certain. If one child (or a parent) has eczema, a sibling's chance is raised — more so if both parents have eczema or allergies — but many siblings of eczema kids have perfectly untroubled skin. There's no way to predict a specific baby's outcome. If a future baby does develop eczema, you'll know exactly what to do (see baby eczema basics), and there's promising evidence that early, careful food introduction may lower related allergy risk in high-risk babies — a conversation for your doctor.
