Why the holidays are hard on skin
It's a pile-up of triggers at once: the cold-then-heated air swing dries the barrier (see our winter eczema guide), travel means strange detergents, dusty guest rooms, and pets (see traveling with eczema), routines slip in the excitement, sleep gets short, and there are more food temptations — and about a third of people with eczema also have a food allergy, so a new treat can occasionally set things off.
Prep before the whirlwind
- Moisturize extra well in the days before travel or big events — go in with the barrier as strong as possible.
- Pack the kit (see the traveling guide): double moisturizer, prescribed creams, gentle cleanser, cotton layers, and your own pillowcase/towels if detergent is a trigger.
- If staying with relatives, a quiet heads-up about fragrance-free and keeping pets out of the sleep space saves a lot.
Protect the two things that slip first: routine and sleep
Amid the chaos, guard the bedtime moisturizer above almost everything — a warm (not hot) bath and a fresh layer of cream before bed calms skin and helps a wound-up child sleep. Even on the wildest day, that one ritual carries the skin through. ‘Good enough’ beats a perfect routine you abandon.
Managing the gatherings
- Overheating at packed indoor parties is a real trigger — dress in cool, breathable layers you can peel off.
- New foods: if your child has a known food allergy, stay vigilant at buffets and with well-meaning relatives offering treats; otherwise, don't over-restrict — enjoy the holiday.
- Relatives with advice: the season brings opinions. Our myths vs facts and getting family on the same page guides help you keep care steady, kindly.
And give yourself grace. Holidays are exhausting even without eczema in the mix. A flare during a hectic, off-schedule week isn't a failure — it's the predictable cost of a wonderful, chaotic time. Do the easy essentials, let the rest go, and know things settle once normal life resumes.
