The balance, and how eczema tips it
On healthy skin, many kinds of bacteria live together in balance, and a bug called Staphylococcus aureus (‘staph’) is only a tiny fraction. On eczema skin during a flare, that balance collapses: diversity drops, and staph can grow to dominate — up to ~90% of the bacteria present. More staph tends to track with more severe flares.
Why that matters — it's a vicious circle
Staph doesn't just sit there. It produces toxins and enzymes that attack the skin barrier — even breaking down filaggrin, the very protein many eczema-prone children are already short on. A weaker barrier means more water loss, more inflammation, more itch… which makes an even friendlier home for staph. That's the loop behind a flare that keeps escalating.
The hopeful flip side: some ‘good’ skin bacteria (like Staphylococcus epidermidis) naturally hold staph in check. Children with milder eczema tend to have more of these protective bugs. So a big part of eczema care is really about protecting the barrier and the balance — not scrubbing the skin sterile.
What this means for everyday care
- Moisturizing is microbiome care. A stronger barrier is a less welcoming place for staph to take over. The daily routine isn't just comfort — it's tilting the balance.
- Don't over-strip the skin. Harsh soaps and over-washing can knock out protective bacteria too — a reason for gentle, soap-free cleansing (see choosing a cleanser).
- Treat flares early. Since staph builds over days-to-weeks, calming a flare promptly stops the loop before it spirals.
- Recurrent infections? This is the science behind why doctors sometimes suggest dilute bleach baths for children who get infected repeatedly — to gently lower staph. A doctor-guided step, not a DIY one.
A word on the hype
‘Microbiome’ is a buzzword now, and the shelves are full of products promising to ‘rebalance’ it. The honest state of things: the science is real and fascinating, but most consumer ‘microbiome’ claims run ahead of the evidence. For now, the proven way to support your child's skin ecosystem is the boring one — gentle cleansing, faithful moisturizing, treating flares, and letting your doctor handle infections.
