Why the ears?
The ear area gets hit for a few reasons: the crease behind the ear traps sweat, shampoo residue, and friction (from glasses or masks); the skin on and around the ear is thin and delicate; and the canal is warm and easily irritated. So you may see dry, red, flaky, sometimes cracked or weepy skin behind the ear, on the outer ear, or itchy flaking in the canal.
Caring for behind and around the ear
- Moisturize the folds gently and regularly — the behind-the-ear split responds well to a fragrance-free emollient worked into the crease.
- Rinse away shampoo/soap residue around the ears well — a common hidden irritant.
- Fragrance-free everything near the ears; watch friction from glasses, hats, and hair products.
- Use any prescribed cream exactly as directed for the sore behind-ear areas — the skin is delicate, so strength matters.
Inside the ear canal is different — see a doctor. The canal is delicate and near the eardrum, so eczema inside it needs medical guidance (doctors may prescribe special ear drops rather than a cream). And a key rule: don't poke cotton swabs down the canal to ‘clean’ or scratch it — that irritates the skin and can cause harm. Itchy canal? Resist the swab and ask the doctor.
Watch for infection
Ear skin that's cracked can get infected. See the doctor promptly if you notice increasing pain, swelling, discharge or pus, a bad smell, or fever, or if your child's hearing seems affected — those can signal an ear infection needing treatment (see signs of infection).
The takeaway
Behind-and-around-the-ear eczema usually responds to gentle, faithful care — moisturize the crease, keep it fragrance-free, rinse well. But the canal, and any ear pain or discharge, belongs to the doctor. Don't improvise inside the ear.
Track the spots that keep flaring
The behind-the-ear crease flares with sweat, shampoo, and glasses. Ollowen helps you spot what sets it off — so you can head it off.
